Job satisfaction levels of elementary school teachers who work in primary schools

ABSTRACT This research examines the general job satisfaction levels among the teachers of pablic elementary schools. In this research, the job satisfaction levels of the teachers have been determined according to their schools they have graduated, priority, the total working time at their schools, age, sex and marital status on the dimentions of the job itself, administration, wage, relationships of the individuals, success - esteem - recognition and indifference of the parents and students. " The Job Satisfaction Scale " has been used in the study as the data collection instrument, the scale that has been arranged as the threesome rating has been formed with 42 items and six dimensions. 9397 teachers who worked at public elementary schools in the borders of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in the academic year of 1997- 1998 have formed the population of the study and 658teachers have served as the sample. The study functions as the field research. Following findings have been reached as the result of statistical analysis. 1- The teachers general job satisfactions levels have been found on the level of " partially ". Job satisfaction levels on the dimensions of job satisfactions have been found (a) " partially " on the dimensions of the job itself (b) " partially " on the dimension administration (c) " dissatisfied " on the dimension of wage (d) " satisfied " on the dimension of the relationships of the individuals (e) " satisfied " on the dimension of success - esteem - recognition (f) " dissatisfied " on the dimension of indifference of the parents and students. VII2- Important differences have been found between the job satisfaction levels of the teachers according to their schools they have graduated, priorty, sex and marital status. 3- There aren't important differences between the job satisfactions levels on the level of 0.05 according to their ages and the working time at their schools. 4- On the dimentions of job satisfaction, important differences have been found between the job satsfaction levels according to the teacher's personel characteristics. Some suggestions have been given at the end according to the findings reached by the study for the educational administrators, teacher education institutions and for the researchers. VIII
