Teachers' opinions on to what extend primary schools posses effective school properties (Çorum city sample)

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to determine elementary teachers? opinionsabout to what extent their schools posses the properties of effective school.In this study, it is wanted to get teachers? opinions about school manager, theother co-workers, students, their parents, and school environment.In this aim, the questionnaire which was developed by Ali BALCI in 1993was applied. In this questionnaire, there are 71 items and each item is in form of fifthscale of Likert type in order teachers to describe their schools according to theproperties of effective school. The questionnaire consists of two parts. Firs partinvolves the items related to teachers? personal knowledge (sex, age, seniority). Asfor second part, there are items which were prepared to measure whether the schoolsreach the properties of effective school or not. The dimensions of effective school areformed as ?school manager?, ?teachers?, ?school environment?, and ?parents? in thequestionnaire.As population, the teachers who work in elementary school in Alaca andSungurlu districts in Çorum were selected. In these places, 23 elementary schoolsand their teachers were chosen as sample. From 1597 teachers in population, 595 ofthem were taken as sample and the questionnaire was applied to 296 teachers in thissample.The results are following according to statistical analysis.1. When it was measured the mean of answers of teachers about schoolmanagers, generally, it was seen that teachers thought that school managersare effective. The general mean of answers of 12 questions which is askedfor this aim was found as high. ( Χ = 3, 77)2. When it was looked the mean the answers of teachers about co-workers, itwas seen that teachers found that co-workers provide contribution to theirschool. The general mean of answers of questions related to the aim wasmeasured high. ( Χ = 3, 77)3. According to teachers, students in their schools are not so qualified torespond teachers? wishes. The general mean of answers of questions whichwere asked to teachers in order to get their opinions about students was low.( Χ = 3,34)4. Teachers? opinions about student?s parents showed that the parents don?tput forward behaviors expected from teachers. The general mean of answersof questions related to parents was found low. ( Χ = 2, 74)5. According to results of statistics, it can be said that teachers are satisfiedfrom school environment. The general mean of the answers of questionswhich were asked to understand teachers? opinions about school environmentwas measured as Χ = 3, 73.
