The familial characteristics, learned helplessness and coping strategies of elementary school students

ABSCTRACT In this research, learned helplessness, coping strategies of the students attending the 6th class in elementary schools were identified depending on the familial characteristics and some variables. In addition, the relation between the learned helplessness and coping strategies. The sampling in scope of mentioned research is consisting of total 257 students of whom 129 are the girls and 128 are the boys, 257 fathers (252 fathers,5 stepfathers) and 257 mothers (256 mothers, 1 stepmother)at 11 elementary schools in İzmir province. The learned helplessness of the children were measured with the Loading Type Scale for the Children (CASQ); and the coping strategies of the students were measured with the Coping Strategies Scale (SYBSÖ), the information of the student have been obtained from the Personal Data Sheet of the students and the Family Data Sheet of the Students and the Family Data Sheet of the parents. In analysis of the data, "t" test in used to determine the difference between duo groups, "variance analysis" is for multi group comparisons; and "correlation analysis technique" is used to determine the relation between and scales. A significant difference was observed between the behavior of the parents against the children in respect of their mistakes and the learned helplessness of the students. The students of whom the learned helplessness are the highest are those whom mothers have punished based on the behavior. Again, the students whom fathers have punished verbally have highest learned helplessness. It was seen that there the students whom fathers have spoken by an explanatory way have the learned helplessness. A meaningful difference was found between the behavior of the parents against the children in respect of their mistakes and the strategies to be used by the students to coping strategies. It was noticed that the children who have been punished physically by their mothers are ones who use the strategies of getting out of coping strategies, dreaming and accusing himself. Sequentially the children who have been punished based on the behavior, the children punished verbally and the children who were not taken care followed this group. The children who have been punished by their VIIfathers based on are those, who have used the strategies of getting out coping strategies and accusing himself, mostly. It was observed that there was a significant difference between the gender economic position of the mothers, the place in where the most part of the life had been passed, of the parents and the strategies to be used by the students to coping strategies. There was no significant difference between the economical situations of the families, the educational situation of the parents, working options of the mothers, sister or brother numbers of the students, behaviors of the parents against to eachother in the case of any disagreement, their approaches towards the success or failure of the children, any violence to be applied to the mothers by their husband and the strategies to be used by the students to coping strategies in addition to the learned helplessness of the students. In addition, as the results of the Scheffe test, it was observed that there was a meaningful difference between the alcohol use frequency of the fathers and the behaviors of the students towards looking for the social support in stress life. It was identified that the children whom fathers have never used alcohol have used the strategy of looking for the social support to coping strategies more often when compared with the ones whom fathers use the alcohol regularly everyday. A significant difference was found between the learned helplessness and the strategies to coping strategies. VIII
