Perceptions and expectations of primary and secondary school teachers related with supervisors' communication skills

This research?s object is to determine the communication skills of primary school inspectors (who are instructed to inspect those teachers which are employed at primary schools) as well as to determine the communication skills of ministry inspectors (who are instructed to inspect those teachers which are employed at secondary schools) during the inspection process.Within the scope of this research a ?Scale for measuring the Inspectors? Communication Skills? was used as an instrument for collecting data. This scale was previously developed by the researcher. The survey consists of a Likert type scale of five degrees and contains 41 items.The research?s pool covered teachers of primary and secondary schools, which were employed within the limits of Konak County in the Province of Izmir. 264 teachers from 17 primary schools and 138 teachers from 10 secondary schools constituted the sample of this research. In total a number of 402 teachers were established. During research the teachers? perception and expectations in regard of the inspectors? communication skills were examined. Arithmetic average (O), standard deviation (SS), t test, unidirectional variance analysis (F) and the Kruskal Wallis Test (KW) have been applied for data analysis.The results of the research may be summarized as follows:1.The perception of teachers -employed at primary and secondary schools- regarding the inspectors? communication skills are at medium level.2.The expectations of teachers -employed at primary and secondary schools- regarding the inspectors? communication skills are at high level.3.There are generally no differences determined regarding teachers? gender, educational level, seniority concerning the inspectors? communication skills.4.There are differences determined between male and female teachers? perception of the inspectors? communication skills within the scale?s ?verbal communication? dimension. Female teachers? perception values are lower.5.Significant differences have been determined generally between primary school teachers and secondary school teachers regarding the perception of the inspectors? communication skills. More teachers employed at secondary schools than at primary schools said that the inspectors? communication skills were sufficient.6.Teachers? expectations were generally and in all dimensions within the scale similar when having similar genders, educational levels, seniorities and workplace levels. Personal characteristics were highly involved at teachers? expectations.7.Significant differences were determined between primary school teachers? perception and expectations. The expectations were rated higher.8.Significant differences were determined between secondary school teachers? perception and expectations. The expectations were rated higher.
