Evaluating 2nd grade english language teaching program under the light of English language teachers opinions

Abstract (EN)

With the recent education reform in Turkey, 8 years compulsory uninterrupted education was repealed and instead of this 12 years compulsory interrupted education named 4+4+4 has come into force in 2012-2013 teaching and learning year. With the 4+4+4 education reform which was put gradually into practice in 2012-2013 teaching and learning year, 2nd grade primary school students begin to learn a foreign language which the students began to learn at 4. grade in previous education reform. Following to the new education reform, 2013-2014 teaching and learning year is the first time that English language have been begun to be taught at 2nd grades in primary schools. So the aim of this study is to evaluate 2nd grade English Language Teaching Program which has been begun to be implemented in the teaching and lerarning year of 2013/2014 under the light of primary school English language teachers' opinions. The study group of the study consists of 144 primary school English language teachers working in primary schools in Diyarbakır and especially teaching English to the 2nd grade primary school students. Within the research it is tried to reach all of the teachers in study group but 141 English language teachers can be reached. The required data for the study is collected via "The Scale of Evaluating 2nd grade English Language Teaching Program in terms of English Language Teachers Views" developed with the aim of determining 2nd grade primary school English language teachers opinions about the 2nd grade English language teaching program. The gathered data has been analyzed with the help of SPSS package program. The results of the analysis have showed that English languge teachers are "Neutral" about the general features, the goals and objectives, the content, the teaching and learning process and evaluation and assessment process of the program. Moreover, statistically significancy have been obtained in terms of such variables as; whether English language teachers have taken the subject of "Teaching English to Young Learners"in their undergraduate training process, whether English language teachers find the 2nd grade English lessons useful, whether English language teachers find the 2nd grade English lesson hours adequate, whether English language teachers have the required teaching and learning environment and materials for teaching English to young learners, whether English language teachers find the class size of the 2nd grades appropriate for teaching English to young learners and whether English language teachers think that 2nd grade primary school students get used to studying with their English teachers.
