Using web 2.0 tool (Wordwall) in teaching proverbs and idioms in primary school 2nd grade Turkish coursebook

The aim of this study is to examine the effectiveness of the Web 2.0 tool, Wordwall, in teaching proverbs and idioms included in the 2nd-grade Turkish textbook. The research investigates whether teaching these linguistic elements—complementary in meaning and usage—through digital technologies aligned with students' developmental levels contributes to their ability to comprehend meanings and use proverbs and idioms correctly in context. The study was designed using a mixed-methods approach, with the quantitative dimension conducted within a quasi-experimental design. Quantitative data were collected from 84 second-grade students. The "Proverb and Idiom Achievement Test" was administered to both the experimental and control groups as pre- and post-tests, and the results were analyzed using SPSS 22. The significance of differences was assessed through t-tests, and effect sizes were calculated using Cohen's d. Qualitative data were collected through "Digital Activity Evaluation Forms" from both the experimental and control group teachers, as well as 42 students in the experimental group. The data were analyzed using content analysis. In addition, document analysis was employed to evaluate the presentation of proverbs and idioms in the 2nd-grade Turkish textbook. The findings indicate that the use of the Wordwall application improved students' achievement in learning proverbs and idioms, increased their engagement, and was viewed positively by teachers. On the other hand, the textbook was found to be limited in its presentation of proverbs and to include idioms only implicitly.
