Investigation of texts in the 4th grade Turkish course books from the perspective of values education

The aim of the study is to examine the texts in the 4th grade Turkish Textbook of the Ministry of National Education, which is taught in primary schools in 2018-2019 academic year, in terms of values education. When the literature is reviewed, it is observed that many studies have been done on this subject before. Unlike similar studies, NVIVO 10 software was used in this study. It has been found that the number of studies aimed at examining qualitative data with the support of computer programs is not sufficient. The research is considered to be important in this respect. The research is a descriptive qualitative research. The data of the study was obtained by document analysis technique. Since document analysis is the analysis of written and visual contents containing information about the intended cases, it has been chosen as the most appropriate analysis method for the study. NVIVO 10 software was used for data analysis. Thanks to this software, the text of the textbook was analyzed. This software is an effective program used in document analysis. This software, which allows the scanning of target words and phrases in the document and effective analysis, has been found suitable for the study. Ministry of Education Publications taught in Turkey in 2018-2019 academic year the scope of the research is the 4th year of primary school Turkish Textbook. In previous years, in addition to Turkish textbooks, workbooks were also offered to students. Many books became a single book because it affected the spine and muscle development of primary school children. The Turkish textbook is one of these examples. This aspect has been beneficial for children. This book was accepted as a textbook by the decision of the Ministry of Education, Education and Training Board dated 28.05.2018 and numbered 78, and 1.301.370 copies were published for the first time with the letter of 12720204 dated 03.07.2018 of the General Directorate of Support Services. Texts in textbooks; justice, science, diligence, solidarity, love of nature, righteousness, honesty, aesthetics, trust, tolerance, compassion, hospitality, self-confidence, sharing, patience, respect, love, responsibility, patriotism, solidarity. While classifying the values in the textbook, the value classifications of Rockeach, Spranger and Schwartz were also included. The locations of these values in the texts were determined. The value of the texts to which they are located refers to the value. The text frequency and ratios of the values determined in the study are presented in tables. The values of the researcher were concluded by taking expert opinion. According to the results obtained, 146 values were determined in the 4 th grade Turkish Textbook. In order to determine the values in the mentioned texts, a Value Review Form was prepared by taking into account the explanations made by the Ministry of National Education about the values. Value definitions in the literature were analyzed in detail during form formation. While preparing the form, opinions were received from the experts working in the field and the form was directed in line with these opinions. The status of 20 values that are aimed to be given to the students in the textbooks of the 4 th Grade Turkish Language Curriculum has been examined with the prepared form. As a result of the research, it was found that the most frequently determined value among the total 146 values was the hardworking value. The least detected value was found to be the value of justice. Based on the findings of the research, comments were made about the elementary school process of values education. Suggestions were made to teachers and school administrators who are the practitioners of values education. The data of the research was obtained from the texts in the Turkish textbook of MEB Publications primary school 4th grade. The findings of the study were compared with similar studies in the literature in recent years and the strengths and weaknesses of the study were discussed. A table was prepared about the previous studies and the place of the study in the literature from the past to the present has been mentioned.
