Exploring the relationship between happiness and temperament in primary school children

As life becomes more complex, the concept of happiness has gained importance. Literature presents various definitions and factors influencing happiness, among which temperament, a hereditary precursor to personality, is considered key. Temperament is defined as the set of behavioral dimensions that reflect individual differences emerging during infancy. The concept of happiness, on the other hand, is generally described as an individual's satisfaction with life, sense of well-being, and attainment of contentment. In this context, the present study aims to examine the relationship between temperament and happiness among primary school children. The research was conducted on a sample of fourth-grade primary school students studying in primary schools in the city center of Erzincan and their parents or guardians during the fall semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. Using convenience sampling method, data were collected from 242 students and their parents or guardians through a questionnaire that included a Participant Information Form, the EAS Temperament Survey, the Subjective Happiness Scale, and the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire. The findings revealed a statistically significant relationship between the emotionality and sociability dimensions of temperament and happiness. However, no significant relationship was found between the activity dimension of temperament and happiness.
