The relationship between empathic tendency levels and value orientation of the primary school fourth grade students

The concepts of empathy, values and morality are the most important topics of education in recent years. One of the problems faced by people today is the inability to use the empathic tendency. Another is that the value judgments cannot be passed on to children and hence to future generations through the model of moral development. In this study, it was aimed to determine the relationship between empathic tendency levels and value orientations of the students in the 4th grade of primary education and to determine the differentiation status of these levels depending upon different variables. The study accourding to screening model was conducted with 671 fourth grade students from five primary schools which were randomly selected in Kdz. Ereğli district in the fall semester of 2018-2019 academic year. Personal Information Form, Emphatic Tendency Scale for Children and Portrait Values Scale were used to obtain the researc data. It was determined that the emphatic tendencies and value orientation of female students were significantly higher than the boys and while students' emphatic tendencies didnot show significant differences in terms of pre-school education, family type and parental education level, there were significant differences in value orientations. The results of the research showed that there was neither strong nor weak but significant relationship between both the cognitive and emotional sub-dimensions of the students' empathic tendency levels and the sub-dimensions of the value orientations.
