Examining the relations between reader self-perception, reading motivation and reading comprehension skills of 4th grade primary school students

In this study, it is aimed to explain the relationships between fourth grade primary school students' reader self perception, reading motivation and reading comprehension skills. In accordance with this purpose; a structural model has been developed. The condition that reader self perception's direct effect on reading comprehension and indirect effect through reading motivation has been tested. In this developed structural model, reading comprehension skill has been treated as endogenous variable, reading motivation has beeen treated as mediating variable and reader self perception has been dealt as exogenous variable. 250 4th grade primary school students in central district of Düzce constitutes the sample of the research. Survey data has been collected through reader self perception scale, reading motivation profile form, personal information form, comprehension questions belonging to narratable and informative reading comprehension texts. In this study, descriptive, correlational and causal analyses have been done. In the analysis of gathered data, median and frequency among descriptive statistics as for the normality distribution Kolmogorov- Smirnov Test have been used. In the analysis of the data AMOS 24 and SPSS 21 package software have been used. The mediation case among variables in the research has been carried out in two phases. Firstly, the condition determined by Baron And Kenny (1986) on the basis of classical regression have been tested for the purpose of proving reading motivation's mediation effect. Secondly, on the model suggested by Şimşek (2007) the mediation effect of reading motivation has been tested through the method testing mediation. According to research results; reader self perception has had a meaningful, positive precursor effect on reading comherension skill and reading motivation. Besides, it has been understood that the relation between reader self perception and reading compherension skill was provided through reading motivation. Reading motivation with regard to reader self perception and reading comherension skills is in the role of exact mediator.
