"Other" perception of primary school students

Abstract (EN)

This research was conducted in the 2020-2021 academic year in order to determine primary school students' perception of the other. The study group consists of 4th graders studying in primary schools in Hatay district. For the research, interviews were conducted with 48 students consisting of Turkish and Syrian students, who were determined by using criterion sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods. In the research, "case study", which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used and the nested single case design was used as the research design. As a data collection tool, a semi-structured interview form "Determination of Other Perceptions of Primary School Students" developed by the researcher was used. Nvivo11 qualitative data analysis program was used in the analysis of the data. Other perceptions of Turkish and Syrian students in the research; tried to be explained through the concepts of foreign, different and similar. As a result of the research; It has been seen that factors such as play, success, talent, love, friendship are important factors that shape the perception of the other. In particular, it was found that the game enables the bond between students to be strengthened. The foreign perception of Turkish students is generally negative; It has been observed that Syrian students have positive feelings towards Turks, whom they perceive as foreigners. It was observed that the students generally explained the differences in terms of physical characteristics. It has been concluded that Turkish and Syrian students are happy when they are similar and feel like siblings. It has been observed that students perceive themselves positively from the eyes of others.
