Design and evaluation of activities for the field of engineering design skills in primary school

The aim of this research is to develop and use the long-term activities applied within the scope of the engineering design skills acquisition area in the primary school science curriculum and to examine the results of the process. The intervention design, which is one of the mixed method designs, was used as a research method. While the pretest posttest control group model was used in the quantitative part of the intervention design, teacher and student interview forms were used in the qualitative part. The data obtained in the research were analyzed by coding. The study group of the research consists of 4th grade students and 2 classroom teachers of a primary school in Mersin Mezitli district in the 2021-2022 academic year. Within the scope of the research, 42 people from the experimental group and 35 people from the control group were determined. For student interviews, groups of 3 and 4 people were formed. One student from each group was selected and a total of 12 people were included in the interview. Word Association Test (KIT) as a data collection tool by ensuring its validity and reliability; A student and teacher interview form for the subject area of science, engineering and design skills was used. In the quantitative part of the data analysis, it was checked whether the data showed normal distribution. In this direction, repetitive ANOVA and one-way MANOVA were used. The pretest and post-test results of the experimental and control groups were examined. It was determined that there was a significant difference in the results of the experimental group compared to the results of the control group. In the data analysis in the qualitative part of the research, it was determined that teachers and students had positive opinions about science, engineering and design skills activities.
