Teachers' and students'views on the strategies and prevention of peer bullying in primary schools

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to examine the opinions of primary school fourth grade teachers and students about the strategies and difficulties used by teachers in preventing peer bullying. Sub-objectives have been determined for this main purpose. The research was conducted by using case study design which is one of the qualitative research models. The study group of the research was 102 fourth grade teachers working in central and village primary schools in central districts of Adana province (Çukurova, Sarıçam, Seyhan and Yüreğir) and totally 102 fourth grade students (63 victim students, 56 bullying students ) during the first semester of 2018-2019 academic year. In the research, "Peer Bullying Determination Scale was used to determine the status of bullying and victimization of students," Personal Information Form to determine the personal characteristics of teachers, " Difficulties Determination Questionnaire "and" Teachers' Opinions on Peer Bullying Prevention Strategies were used to reach the opinions of students about their peer bullying prevention strategies. Percentage, frequency, descriptive and content analysis methods were used in the analysis of the data. When the results obtained from the results are examined, it is observed that teachers use the most stimulate "strategy according to the strategies used to prevent bullying, besides directing the student to the right behavior", ensuring the cooperation of the school and the family "," informing the family empathy ", to investigate the cause of his behavior" and the student's damage to someone else's property, it provides the student to cover the damage. When the findings regarding the difficulties faced by teachers in preventing peer bullying were examined it was observed that teachers stated mostly 'family does not accept this situation ", close to this conclusion that "the family does not support the teacher in preventing peer bullying' and normal perception of child violence "," continuity of behavior ", "indifference of parents. Finally, the general answers mean of the students to the question of what your teacher is doing in the face of peer bullying were 'our teacher verbally violates, in some cases, I warn "and" I prefer to remain unresponsive "; the general answers of the students'to the question of what do you want your teacher to do? were 'what our teacher did is right, that is,I want him/her to verbal violence and the general answers to the questions of 'when you say sentences that don't like each other "; 'when you are unable to establish a friendship with each other'; 'when you leave alone each other while not taking to the groups of friends'; and 'when you forcibly take each other's belongings and money?' were my teacher remains unresponsive to the this situation.
