Analysis of risks from design and application faults of fire installations in manufacturing facilities

Fire is a disaster that causes death, injury and major financial loss. Fire risks vary widely and some of these risks are due to fire installations. For old or existing fire installations in manufacturing facilities, fire risk analysis in the form of a detailed but traditional check-list based on standards can produce unrealistic results. For this reason, new and more holistic approaches need to be implemented. This thesis is for manufacturing facilities in Turkey, "Fire Safety Risk Ranking System" in the form of a risk analysis method aims to propose. The purpose of a fire safety risk ranking system, evaluate the performance of various fire safety features of existing buildings and to quantify the fire risk level. For this purpose, 30 manufacturing facilities were applied. When applying, fire safety criteria used to calculate risk score is formed considering national and international legislation and standards. These criteria are divided into three main sections; structure features, fire safety systems and management systems. Firstly, a questionnaire was applied to fire experts who had 20 years of experience to determine the weights for these criteria with the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. Each weight calculated arithmetically, was multiplied by the scored risk score, resulting in a total risk score. Fire safety ranking score chart in the facilities was created with the data obtained from the total risk score. According to the results, there were 2 facilities that received 100 full points in 30 manufacturing facilities and 18 facilities were found below 70 points. Two of them had a very low score below 50 points, while a total of 8 facilities were below 60 points. Although fire safety measures were in compliance with legislation and standards in 7% of the applied manufacturing facilities, approximately 67% were found to be partially or largely insufficient in terms of fire safety.
