The interpretation of the legal verses of Sûrat al-Ahzâb in the exegesis of Imâm Mâturîdî

The main aim of this thesis is to examine the ahkâm (legal-ruling) verses contained in Sūrat al-Ahzâb through a systematic approach in line with Imâm al-Mâtürîdî's juridical perspective. In this context, the study first addresses al-Mâtürîdî's scholarly milieu, intellectual background, and methodological framework. It then analyzes the historical context of Sūrat al-Aḥzāb, the occasions of its revelation, and the principal juridical issues it contains. In the subsequent chapters, verses related to marriage law, ḥijāb, the institution of adoption, family privacy, the status of the Prophet, his family life, and public order are evaluated in light of al-Mâtürîdî's exegetical interpretations. Through this analysis, al-Mâturîdî's position and contribution within the Ḥanafī legal tradition are elucidated. The juridical issues addressed in Sūrat al-Ahzāb-such as marriage, hijâb, adoption, family privacy, public order, and zihār-are treated in al-Mâtürîdî's tafsîr beyond a purely literal level, incorporating their social and legal dimensions. This approach played a decisive role both in shaping the methodological structure of the Hanafî legal tradition and in the theoretical framework of Sunnî kalâm thought. The limited reception of al-Mâtürîdî's ideas during his lifetime can be attributed to several factors, including his geographical distance from political centers, the language and style of his works, the lack of sufficient attention from contemporary historians, and perceptions in some circles that associated him closely with Mu'tazilite thought. This study aims to make a significant contribution by systematically analyzing juridical interpretations within the classical tafsīr literature and by more clearly highlighting al-Mâtürîdî's role in the development of Hanafî legal thought.
