Improving communication skills of young learners through language learning strategies

Effective strategies used to overcome encountered difficulties in second language learners? communication skills are of crucial importance. Hence, second language learners might utilize the strategies on how to cope with such communication difficulties. This study aims to find out the effect of strategy training in the use of strategies for listening and speaking in English as a foreign language (EFL) in the context of 6th grade EFL learners attending a state primary school and to investigate the second language learners? awareness of the speaking strategies and their frequent choice of strategies. In addition, the perspectives of the participants in the use of strategy training for listening and speaking skill are examined in this study.After addressing the issues of terminology and definitions, the theoretical underpinnings of the Language Learning Strategy concept are concentrated on. After clarifying these issues, through related literature, it focuses on listening and speaking strategies (Communication Strategies) and strategy training for developing speaking skill.The study examines a case group of EFL learners during one semester period. The participants received strategy training in the use of strategies for listening and speaking (communication).The results were measured using different instruments: Pre-Post-speaking strategy questionnaires, language learning diary, mini papers and verbal reports / semi formal interviews.The data obtained from the Pre-and Post- speaking strategy questionnaires were analyzed in quantitative method. The results of the data showed significant differences in strategy use of the participants. Research findings from both the quantitative and qualitative data shed light on the efficacy of training learners in the use of listening and speaking strategies and raising their awareness through strategy training.
