Abstract (EN)

The infertility occurs when one of the stages necessary for pregnancy is precluded. Diagnosing infertility requires tests for both sexes and when all of these tests are inconclusive, this condition is called "unexplained infertility". This is a descriptive study which aims to determine the relationships of these women whose tests for determining the cause of the infertility but remained inconclusive with their mothers. This study have been made between the dates of 10.10.2015–30.12.2015 with the patients admitted to Ege University Family Planning Infertility Research and Treatment Center with infertility. The subject group for this study was taken from aforementioned center were diagnosed of unexplained infertility. This group consisted of 54 women. The patients needed to finish at least primary school. The control group consisted of 36 fertile women whose age and education were matched with the subject group. Written consent was taken from all the patients. A "general information form" was prepared by the researcher, which aims to determine the socio-economic condition and the medical story of infertility; alongside of a "problems concerning family" form to determine the subject's problems concerning her family, "Rosenberg self-respect scale" and "hospital anxiety and depression scale" were used in this study. Necessary approval has been taken from the Ethical Board of Ege University Medical Department . The mean age of patients in this study is 31.70 ± 4.51. The range of age was mostly in 29-35years. The most of the patients have finished primary school, if not more, were housewives and weren't employed. When the subject group and the research group were compared based on socio-demographic data, significant differences in age, education, profession and family structure were not determined. However a significant difference in employment rate was shown. The self-respect of infertile women was average (3.44 ± 0.71). The anxiety of infertile women was shown to be higher for a considerable amount (p=0.00). Any significant difference between the depression scores of the groups was not determined (p=0.20). Any significant difference between self-respect and anxiety scores of the infertile group was determined (p=0.02). Thus, it can be said for infertile women that as their anxiety scores elevate, their self-respect scores lower. When infertile women compared to fertile women, infertile women has descripted their mother as more authoritarian, more protective and less seperate. Infertile women have been seeing their mothers more compared to their fertile counterparts. It was determined that infertile women had descripted having children as a scary experience and the purpose of sexuality is to have children. These differences between groups were significant (p<0.05). Infertile women were more anxious and had lower self-respect compared to the control group. Consequently, we thought that the relationships of mother candidates diagnosed with unexplained infertility with their mothers might have a negative impact on the candidates' definition of being a mother, pregnancy, birth and plans for being a mother. However, further research with larger subject groups are needed.
