Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study, entitled as 'The Effect of Narrative Method From Mnemonics Used in English Lesson on Vocabulary Knowledge', is to determine the effect of narrative method in English classes of 9th graders on vocabulary achievement and retention. Experimental model with a pre-test post-test control group is carried out in the research. The study is carried out in 2014-2015 educational year, Şehit Mehmet Tez Anatolian High School and in district of Yerköy/Yozgat with 68 students in two sections of 9th graders in the school. 34 of students are in section assigned as experimental group and the other 34 students are in section B assigned as control group. While target words are taught using narrative method in experimental group, they are taught with time-honored practice in control group for 6 weeks. Five narrations including the desired target words and English vocabulary achievement test developed by the researcher are used as data collection tools with the aim of answering identified sub problems of the search. The words are placed in narrations and redesigned creating a meaningful whole by the researcher again. Parametric and non-parametric tests are used to analyze resulting data. According to the results of independent samples t-test relating vocabulary achievement pre-test scores of experimental and control groups, there is no significant difference between groups [P> .05]. After the application, as for the result of Covariance analysis relating the difference between vocabulary achievement post-test scores corrected as to pre-test scores, there is a significant difference in favour of experimental group [X DENEY =28.37 _ XKONTROL=20.17 / p<.01]. As for that the result of independent samples t test done in order to determine whether control and experimental students' vocabulary retention test scores differs significantly, there is a statistically significant difference in favour of the experimental group. These results suggest that vocabulary teaching with narrative method have a substantial effect upon vocabulary achievement and retention.
