Self efficiency perception of the student teachers on critical reading

The main aim of this study is to determine the critical reading level of the English student teachers. The meaning of critical reading can be explained as follows. Critical reading is to think about the text which is read and to comment on the topic. The pros of critical reading can only be understood by compairing the advantages of critical reading with the traditional reading methods.This study was performed at Hacettepe, Başkent and Dicle Universities and the study aimed at identifying the self sufficiency of the students on critical reading. This study was put into practice in 2007-2008 Fall and Spring semesters. In the study, the students were asked to answer 25 questions. The answers given were used to figure out the self sufficiency level of the studens.The number of participants in the survey is 227. The participants were given 25 questions and were asked to answer them sincerely. The results of the study shows that the general approach of the students towards critical reading is positive and that the students find themselves considerably sufficient., The subjects of this study generally think that they can be creative readers and that they can analyse the text given.The results of the study shows that most of the student teachers can successfully use the critical reading tecniques. Provided that the results of self sufficiecy test results are sujective, there comes out the need to support this study with another study. As a matter of fact a feasibility survey which was done by Danish Technological Institude shows that the result are mostly higher than expected when people evaluate themselves (Henrik ve Martin, 2006). In order to get rid of this weakness in the study which was done, another survey was held to the lecturers who lecture in the same universities. And the results were then taken into consideration.
