The effects of smoking, alcohol, drugs, the factors effecting drug usage, and social family support to the students at health school

Smoking cigarettes, alcohol consumption and substance use are the most increasing problems all around the world especially affecting young people. That growing problem for community health is accepted within preventable public health problems. This research aims to show the factors about cigarettes, alcohol, drugs consumption of the students at Health Institution of Higher Education at İnönü University and the effects of social support coming from their families.The participants of this descriptive research are the students (546 scholars) at Health Institution of Higher Education at İnönü University. I have reached 504 of the group in research scope. The datas of the research have been gathered by a directly observed poll which includes the questions about socio-demographic characteristics, evaluation of cigarettes, alcohol, drugs consumption and the Scale of Social Support coming from families. Afterwards the datas have been evaluated according to X² and t tests in SPSS programme .72.8% of the students group within the research scope are females, 27.4% of them are at the first year of their education, 69.8% are being educated in nursing school, and the average value of the students? ages is 20.74±1.85 (minimum: 17 maximum: 32). 29% of the students group have been currently using water pipes and it has been described that the percentage of the smokers in the group is 12.3% and 46.3% of the smokers have just started smoking due to family matters. It has been understood that 3.2% of the smokers are highly addicted to smoking. The 16.9% of the students are currently social drinkers and it has been figured out that the 47% of those groups have used alcohol just because of curiosity. The 54.5% of the students who use drug substance (2.2%) are hashish smokers and 63.6% of them have started to use substance due to curiosity. It has been understood that the frequency of smoking, water pipe and drug substance use is significantly high within male students (p<0.05). The use of substance is very meaningful statistically in the group of the students who have individuals addicted to substance in their families (p<0.05). The average of Family Social Support scale has been determined as 31.56± 7.57 (minimum: 2 maximum: 40). It has been understood that the students at the bottom level of Family Social Support scale have higher smoking cigarettes and substance use ratios (p<0.05).As a result, it has been figured out that the number of the students who use cigarettes, alcohol and substance at Health School is particularly low and social support coming from their families is quite high. It is necessary that we should act more carefully to risky young people who use cigarettes, alcohol and substance and some qualitative researches on this subject must be made.Key words: Health Institution of Higher Education students, cigarette, alcohol, substance use, family social support.
