Determination of the incidence and antibiotic susceptibility of coagulase positive and negative Staphylococcus species in reservoir pets that may pose a risk to human health

Abstract (EN)

Antimicrobial resistance of a wide variety of infectious bacteria is considered a growing public health threat that concerns countries and many sectors. Studies reveal that antimicrobial resistance climbs among certain microorganisms that cause infection in pets, and their spread is dominant among pets, their owners, veterinary service workers, and pets can act as reservoirs for such bacteria. In the study, swabs were taken from the skin of 30 cats and 30 dogs brought to the veterinary clinic for examination or control. Antibiotic resistance was investigated in coagulase positive and coagulase negative Staphylococcus isolated from these swabs. All coagulase positives were defined as S. aureus. In the obtained isolates, the presence of resistance to a total of 15 antibiotics, 10 of which must be followed in CLSI 2020, was examined by disc diffusion. RT-PCR and Sanger sequencing was performed. It was determined that coagulase negative Staphylococcus were more dominant in cat and dog flora. The rate of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus was higher in dog isolates than in cats. The number of S. aureus isolates with coagulase positive Staphylococcus was also proportionally higher in cats. The greatest number of antibiotic resistance and multi-antibiotic resistance were detected in isolates from cats. These antibiotics are penicillin, sulfonamide, macrolide and lincosamides, which are used in the treatment of serious infections, especially in human medicine.
