Acute effects of inspiratory muscle WARM-up protocol on basketball basic skills

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study was to examine the acute effects of an inspiratory muscle warm-up protocol on basketball basic skills. Ten volunteers aged 18-25, who were basketball players, participated in the study. The participants were randomly assigned to four different applications on different days: control, inspiratory muscle warm-up protocol (IMW), placebo inspiratory muscle warm-up protocol (IMWp), and general warm-up protocol (GW). After the warm-up protocol, the participants performed the Johnson basketball skill test and the AAHPERD basketball rapid shot test. The control application involved no warm-up protocol, while the IMW protocol consisted of two sets of 30 breaths at 40% of maximal inspiratory pressure to warm up the respiratory muscles. The IMWp protocol consisted of two sets of 30 breaths at 5% of maximal inspiratory pressure. A Powerbreathe inspiratory training device was used for the inspiratory muscle warm-up protocol. Data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0. One-way repeated measures ANOVA and LSD tests were used to determine differences between applications. Statistical analysis showed that IMW and GW protocols had a significant positive effect on basketball skills compared to control and placebo applications (p<0.05). In conclusion, the inspiratory muscle warm-up protocol had a positive acute effect on fundamental basketball skills.
