Evaluation of insulin resistance based on lymphocyte morphology

Abstract (EN)
Lymphatic system; It is a system composed of cells, tissues and regulatory mechanisms that regulates the body's immune system. Lymphocytes are the main components that play an active role in creating an immune response in the body. Lymphocytes are classified into three groups according to their active forms: small, medium and large. A decrease in the number of lymphocytes means that the body's resistance to infections is low. The increase in the number and diameter of lymphocytes occurs when the metabolism stimulates the immune system against diseases. Associated with metabolic syndrome components such as inflammation, impaired glucose tolerance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. In parallel with the increase in the prevalence of obesity and diabetes, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is increasing day by day. Insulin resistance, which has a major pathogenic role in the development of the metabolic syndrome, is the state of showing less than the expected biological effect of insulin in insulin-sensitive organs. In the case of inflammation, the increase in metabolic syndrome increases the risk of insulin resistance and causes a change in lymphocyte count. In line with this information, the aim of the study was to investigate the differences between lymphocyte sizes in individuals with and without insulin resistance. In order to carry out the analysis, the comparison of the biochemical scans of the blood samples taken from the individuals and the histological lymphocyte morphological evaluations of the statistical data in the blood smear preparations were provided. Adult individuals between the ages of 20-70 who applied to the Biruni University endocrine clinic were included in the study. The determined parameters were compared in two independent groups and presented in the form of tables and graphics. All statistical analyzes were evaluated using R software / programming (version 3.6.2 (2019-12-12) - CRAN). As a result, a significant difference was found in lymphocyte count, neutrophil, basophil, eosinophil, insulin fasting, HDL-K, MCHC, RDW-SD parameters (p<0,05). There was no significant difference in the mean of lymphocyte morphology (p>0,05). In line with all this information, it is thought that lymphocyte typing will contribute to further studies.
