A DVD application that enables usage of interactive video in education

Adapting advantages of interactive video, interactive television and interactive computer based applications used in educational technology to DVD medium will provide more economic and widespread usage with similar effectiveness. This study aims to investigate technical implementation of educational interactive multi-media material in DVD medium and determine principles that constitute framework for designers. Developing educational interactive DVD application and content, evaluation of the application by experts are the scope of the study. The method of the study can be described as examining publications, standards, and educational software in different media, developing design of the application by considering reviewed materials, implementing application by DVD authoring tool and VM command set, preparing expert evaluation form, implementing expert evaluation, and analyzing results. Authoring tool selected for the study is DVD-lab PRO which is a low-cost commercial DVD authoring tool with many high-end features produced by Mediachance. Expert evaluation method was used to evaluate developed DVD content. Experts are selected according to expertness in related disciplines, experience in multimedia studies, academic career. The evaluation form that developed by the researcher based on ISO 14915-1, 2, 3 and ?13 Golden Rules in Interactive Design? was used during expert evaluation. The data gathered during the study was analyzed by using qualitative and quantitative data analysis methods. After analyzing result of expert evaluation form, it is figure out that DVD application is successful according to experts in examining criteria. However, in detail analyzing of expert evaluation form problems in navigation of the application, icons of quick search and glossary buttons, legibility of texts in information screens, function of exit button, structure of video settings menu, and help provided to users are determined. Although, DVD application is successful according to result of the expert evaluation form, the application should be redeveloped to solve defined problems.
