The relationship of internet gaming disorder with serum oxytosin levels and temperature character characteristics

Purpose: The aim of our study was to investigate the relationship between Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), serum oxytocin level, which has also been studied in substance use disorders, and temperament character traits. Method: The research group consisted of 36 patients with internet gaming addiction who met the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria from MCBÜ health campus students and research assistants. The control group consisted of 44 healthy volunteers from the same population. Sociodemographic and Clinical Information Form, Temperament and Character Inventory, and Mind Reading Test were conducted for both groups. For plasma oxytocin levels, blood was drawn into a 10 cc standard vacuum tube between 08:00 and 09:00 in the morning on an empty stomach. The obtained data were transferred to the computer environment and statistical analyzes were made. Results: The plasma oxytocin level of the group with Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) was found to be lower than the control group (p=0.048 ). Compared to the control group, the NS2 (impulsivity) subscale of novelty seeking was found in the group with IGD; The C1 (social approval) subscale was statistically significant. Low level of positive correlation between Internet Gaming Disorder (Adapted) Scale score and NS2 (impulsivity) and NS-total; P (perseverance); S1 (taking responsibility); S2(purposefulness); S5(compatible secondary traits) ; A low level of negative correlation was found between STotal and C1 (social acceptance). A low degree of negative correlation was found between plasma oxytocin level and NS2 (impulsivity) subscale in those with IGD (p=0.038). A statistically significant difference was found between plasma oxytocin levels and the correct number of eyes test (p=0.036). Conclusion: When the findings of our study were evaluated, oxytocin levels were found to be low in individuals with game addiction. Novelty seeking from temperament and character traits NS2 (impulsivity) subscale; There is a statistically significant difference between the C1 (social approval) subscale and people with IGD. It concludes that IGD may vary in the neurochemical process or may be associated with certain neurochemical predispositions and that necessary precautions and treatment plans are required. In addition, temperament and character traits are also important for prevention and treatment approaches in IGD.
