Evaluation of the serum levels of paraoxonase and arylesterase in pregnant women with intrauterin growth restriction:A prospective study

Abstract (EN)

Objectives: The aim of our study was to determine whether serum paraoxonase (PON1) and arylesterase (ARE) levels are altered in patients followed up with new diagnosis of intrauterin growth restriction (IUGR) and to compare the values with those of controls followed up with third trimester healty pregnancies.Material and Methods: The study was obtained prospective consist of IUGR group who has taken new diagnosis and healty control group who has formed from same age, body mass index (BMI) and gestastional week matched. Serum PON1 and ARE activities and doppler flow parameters of arteria umbilicalis (UA) and arteria cerebralis media (MCA) were measured in 50 subjects in IUGR group and 51 subjects in control group. In statistical evaluation of data were performed Mann Whitney-U test and Student t test. P value <0.05 was accepted as significant.Results: The PON1 (p:0,034) and ARE (p:0,001) activities was found to be higher in the patients with IUGR compared to controls. Both UA and MCA doppler parameters were normal in healty group. There were 16 patients in IUGR group that found absent end-diastolic flow(n:4) or reverse end-diastolic flow (n:12) and systolic- diastolic ratio of UA were increased. There were 8 patients in IUGR group that found MCA pulsatility index decreased. Compared with IUGR fetuses had normal UA and MCA doppler velocimetries, having abnormal doppler parameters was not associated with altered PON1 or ARE serum levels.Conclusion: The patients with IUGR were determined to have higher serum PON1 and ARE levels when clinical signs of the disease are present. This result thought to be the response of antioxidant system to oxidative stress, not the cause of it. Prospective studies are needed to determine whether these enzymes can predict the development of IUGR as a panel of oxidative stress marker.
