Investigating the role of serum prolidase enzyme activity and inflammatory laboratory parameters during the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract (EN)

Objective: Prolidase enzyme is a cytosolic metalloproteinase that hydrolyzes the iminodipeptides with proline or hydroxyproline at the carboxy terminal end. It plays a crucial role in regulating the collagen turnover which is believed to be affected by the chronic inflammatory response, one of the main characteristics of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the role of serum prolidase enzyme activity and inflammatory parameters during the progression of T2DM. Method: A total of 168 subjects, 41 controls, 43 prediabetics, 41 type 2 diabetics without MVC and 43 type 2 diabetics with MVC were enrolled in this case-control study. Biochemical and inflammatory parameters were measured using photometric and electrochemiluminescence methods. SPEA was measured using the colorimetric method. Results: SPEA was statistically significantly increased in type 2 diabetics with and without MVC compared with prediabetes and controls (P <0.001 for all). SPEA was also positively associated with the severity of the disease (r= 0.494, P <0.001). NLR and NHR was found to be statistically significantly increased during the progression of MVC in patients with T2DM (P= 0.014; P= 0.002, respectively), and positively associated with the severity of the disease (r= 0.201, P= 0.009; r= 0.246, P= 0.001, respectively). No statistically significant correlation was observed between SPEA and the evaluated inflammatory parameters among groups. Conclusion: Our findings conclude that SPEA may have a significant role in the development of macrovascular complications of T2DM. In addition, NLR and NHR could be useful in predicting the macrovascular complications of T2DM. Keywords: Prolidase, collagen, inflammation, diabetes mellitus.
