Sociodemographic characteristic of people living in Erbil

Abstract (EN)

This descriptive study, based on households, was conducted to learn about the social and demographic characteristics of people living in the city of Arbil in Iraq. There were 322,719 households in 41 neighborhoods in Arbil city center. Calculated minimum sample size was 384. 385 households were selected into sample by using simple random sampling method from 41 neighborhoods proportional to size in the city of Arbil. The questionnaires prepared to determine sociodemographic characteristics were applied to household leaders. Overall, it was determined that half of the families in Arbil includes 1-3 individuals; the 17% of them is extended families, 74% the nuclear family; the vast majority of families was living in detached houses; people who were under 50 year had had better education; 65% of households had monthly income under 1,000 $; the people under 39 age was working as laborers of state with a higher ratio than the others. In addition, it was established that the average number of pregnancy among women ever had pregnancy was 3.3; the average number of delivery among women ever delivered was 3.0; the average number of live birth among women ever had live births was 2.93; the average number of stillbirth among women ever had had stillbirth was 1.29; the average of abortions of women ever had abortion was 1.42; the average number of living children among women ever had children was 2.90. To obtain more correct information about Arbil, it was proposed that detailed studies in the form of including the characteristics of all individuals in households as in the World Demografic and Health Surveys.
