Abstract (EN)

This study will look at how much weight the soil in different areas of Al-Hilla, a growing city in Iraq, can support. We will specifically consider if circular, square, rectangular, and strip-shaped foundations can be built in those areas. Furthermore, we will assess how the depth, width, shape, and water level of the footing affect the ability of the soil layers to support weight. This estimation will be done using the methods developed by Terzaghi, Skempton, and Hansen. The main findings of this study are that square and circular footings are stronger than strip and rectangle footings in terms of ultimate bearing capacity and safe bearing capacity. The maximum amount of weight that the soil can hold gets higher as the foundation goes deeper into the ground, and it is also safer. When the water level in the ground is near the surface, the ground's ability to support weight is reduced by about half. Moreover, the strength of the soil to support weight increases as the foundation goes deeper. Because the weight added to an object is increasing, the impact of increased depth on the ability to support weight is noticeable. Furthermore, the ability of soil to support plants and organisms is greatly affected by the position of the water beneath the ground. The ability of the soil to support weight will decrease if there is a water table at a depth from the foundation that is less than half of the foundation's width
