Oil in Iraq: Past, present, future

Oil is considered one of the most important natural resources worldwide, playing a vital role in the economies of both large and small countries. Iraq is known as one of the largest oil exporters and possesses the world's third-largest oil reserves. The origins date back to the discovery of the first oil well in the Babylon region of Iraq, leading up to the year 1927, and since then, oil has become the main source of the Iraqi economy. Subsequently, in order to manage the country's oil industry, the Basra Petroleum Company was established in 1954, followed by the North Petroleum Company in 1961. Over the past decades, Iraq's oil industry has undergone several transformations. Production was increased in the 1970s, but decreased in the 1980s due to internal wars and conflicts. Then, after the American war in 2003, the oil industry was completely rebuilt. Currently, the Iraqi government is making efforts to develop the country's oil industry and enhance its efficiency. Many oil fields are being restructured, and production processes are being improved. The government is also making extra efforts to attract international companies and encourage more investment in the oil industry. It aims to create a favorable investment environment and improve industry infrastructure. These efforts are expected to strengthen the Iraqi economy in the long run and improve the living standards of its citizens. The future of oil in Iraq is influenced by various factors, such as foreign investments, technological advancements, and global economic changes. While the demand for oil is expected to continue in the near future, a gradual shift towards renewable energy and other alternatives is also anticipated. This implies the need for Iraq to diversify its economy and develop other sources of income. On the other hand, the Iraqi petroleum sector faces several challenges, including corruption, security fluctuations, and environmental difficulties. However, with improved security conditions and increased foreign investments, Iraq can make progress within the petroleum sector and enhance its production capacity.
