The social changes in the cities of Pamphylia from the third century to fifth century A. D.

In the third century A. D. the Roman Empire experienced economic crisis associated with the Roman Empire?s administrative, military and social disorganisation. This is the accepted reality. Multi-dimensional crisis affected the Pamphylia region, the area and the extent of which are examined in this thesis.When Diocletianus became Emperor (284-305) administrative and military changes were made.State government became a centralised system the emperor?s tax was increased so that the noble class resigned from their duty in brief this situation caused the euergesia system. Also this matter caused changes to the city administration. Cities were called `comes? that were managed by a governor. With the acceptance of Christianity the episcopacy was established as was the church organization.From the 4th century, Pagan belief was replaced by Christian belief. Temples were transformed into churchs and synagogs. Tension between Christians and Pagans seriously affected society. In urban areas, the governor of cities or `pater tes poleos? were responsible for development activities.The above mentioned changes and developments were determined through the use of epigraphic documents, literary texts, numismatic documents and archalogical excavation reports this thesis attempts to provide an explanation within the historical context.The war enviroment and external attacks affected the urban population in Pamphylia in the third century A.D. During this century, Pamphylia was exposed to the attacks of the Goths, especially Isaurian brigandage. But these attacks didn?t affect Pamphylia cities as much as elsewhere in Asia minor.
