Abstract (EN)
Throughout their lives, people seek environments that allow them to remain healthy and to sustain that health in safe conditions. For workers in particular—who spend a substantial portion of their lives at the workplace—the provision of healthy, hazard free work settings is a primary determinant of overall quality of life. Depending on the work environment, the nature of the tasks performed, and the scope of the job, employees are continuously exposed to chemical, physical, biological, psychosocial, and ergonomic risks. This study focuses on chemical risks, one of the key factors affecting worker health and safety. Owing to their intrinsic structures and properties, the presence and use of chemicals at the workplace make robust occupational health and safety (OHS) measures imperative. Accordingly, the research reviews current knowledge on the health effects of chemicals, their routes of entry into the body, the classification of hazardous substances, as well as best practices for storage, labelling, disposal, fire types, and fire safety. Based on these findings, concrete recommendations have been developed to improve health and safety conditions in the workplace. Results indicate that, in addition to chemical reactions and exposures, fire hazards associated with working with chemicals constitute a critical determinant of worker well being. Consequently, beyond technical precautions, heightened awareness, sensitivity, and continuous training programs are indispensable. The study further argues that incorporating a compulsory course titled "Fire and Fire Safety" into the curriculum from primary school through university would make a meaningful contribution to fostering a sustainable safety culture across society.
