Abstract (EN)

Aim: This study was carried out to determine the frequency and causes of the health accidents and occupational diseases of midwifes and the nurses working in the delivery room of state hospitals that applied quality management in Izmir. Methods: The sample of research was composed of 91 midwifes and nurses who work in the delivery room of four state hospitals in Izmir. A survey is used as a method of data collection. For statistical analyses of the data, descriptive statistics, independent t test, Chi-square test for binary comparisons, and logistic regression for multiple comparisons were used. For all analyses two-way p value was used a p value of <0.05 was considered as statistical significance. Results According to the data, of the 91 personnel, 59 (62.6%) have been injured, 52 (57.1%) have had occupational disease at least once in the past 5 years. Detection rates of occupational diseases were as follows; 41,5% backache, 41,5% varicose veins, 41,5% stress, 40,7% wrist pain, 42.9% neck ache, 14.3% panic attacks, 12.1% latex allergy. The causes of occupational accidents were determined as, 91.2% intensive workload, 89.9% long working hours, 67%stress. Conclusion: The most prevalent occupational diseases among the delivery room-employees are back pain, varicose veins and wrist-pain, the most common reasons for occupational accidents are intensive workload and long working hours. Education on occupational health and safety will help to decrease such problems.
