The health problems and services in İzmir from the ınvasion to the ındependence (1919-1922)

ABSTRACTThe Health Problems and Services in İzmir from the Invasion to the Independence (1919-1922)In the 19th century, under the effect of the West, significant activities were done in the health field in the city, and with the opening of the health institutions, the struggle with the common diseases became important. Cures for the diseases were searched during the invasion years too, lack of education, hygiene, money, clean water were the main health problems. Both the hospitals and Health Institutions of the people from different religions and nations and Eşrefpaşa Hospital, Military Hospital and Gureba-yı Müslimin of the Turks served all the citizens without considering their sexes and sects. With the invasion, the Turkish hospitals were invaded by the Rums and most of the Turkish pharmacies were looted. Because of the İzmir fire in 1922 Scotch, Dutch, Armenian, British and Rum hospitals were not able to continue their activities.Aid commissions and charity foundations worked actively with the help of the society during the invasion period. Because of the difficulties of the war, the increasing rate of epidemics suffered the people of the city a lot; however, by the precautions, most of the diseases were no longer epidemic by the end of the invasion. Providing clean water and trying to give hygienic service in the Turkish baths were the prominent activities among the ones in the invasion period.İzmir, which is the westernized part of our country, is always active in establishing the health conscious today.
