Investigation of acute changes in vitamin d and homocysteine levels in ischemic stroke cases

Abstract (EN)

Stroke is a clinical table occurs as a result of impaired brain blood flow within cerebrovascular diseases, results in death occurs with cerebral dysfunction. The association of stroke with vitamin D, which is one of the major causes of mortality and morbidity in the community, was an important part of this study. Another risk factor that is thought to be related to stroke is homocysteine. Hyperhomocysteinemia is an important risk factor for ischemic stroke. In this clinical study, we aimed to investigate the vitamin D and homocysteine levels in patients with acute ischemic stroke. The study included 36 patients with ischemic stroke who were followed-up at the time of admission to the hospital and 27 of these patients 24 hours after hospital admission. Blood samples were taken from patients and healthy volunteers. Blood samples were taken and serum levels of glucose, HbA1c, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), vitamin D and homocysteine levels were measured. As a result of the analysis of obtained data it was found that the glucose levels of the ischemic stroke patients that the samples were taken during the admission to the hospital were significantly higher than those in the patients that the samples were taken after 24 hours and the healthy controls; the platelet levels of ischemic stroke patients whose samples taken during hospital admission were significantly higher than those patients whose samples taken after 24 hours, significantly lower than healthy controls; HbA1c levels in both ischemic stroke patients groups were higher than healthy control group; systolic and diastolic pressure values were higher in both ischemic stroke patient groups than the healthy control group; 25-OH-Vit D levels were lower than healthy control group; homocysteine levels in both groups of ischemic stroke patients were found to be lower than healthy control group. Considering the results obtained from our study, it can be said that vitamin D and homocysteine levels are important markers for the determination of stroke.
