Determination of some reproductive characteristics of striped seabream (Lithognathus mormyrus) couht in İskenderun Bay

Prof. Dr. Şehriban ÇEK This study was conducted to investigate some reproductive characteristics of striped seabream {Lithognathus mormyrus) found in İskenderun Bay. GSI, HSI, spawning pattern and ovarium histology of the species were determined from fish sampled from commercial catches. Highest GSI values were between July and September indicating the spawning period is in late summer. Lowest HSI values in these months confirm this result. The results showed that the striped seabream has an asynchronous mode of ovarian development and the histologycal study carried out on ovarian tissue indicated that a number of distinct developmental stages can be delineated for oocyte development. Oocyte development are devided into two main parts; primary and secondary growth phase. While primary growth phase were similar to other teleost, some differences were observed in secondary growth stage. Key Words: Lithognathus mormyrus, GSI, HSI ve histology II
