Abstract (EN)
ABSTRACT The dynamics of fear which is a natural, universal and common mood among people differ according to the cultures. Because fear intrinsically is a mood which is developed against a threatening situation for the living creature, it cannot be thought apart from evil. The points of views which have been developed against evil by different cultures have become effective in the shaping of horror images. In the cinema which is an art based on images, horror films have shaped according to the understanding of fear and evil of the society in which they have risen. This study is based on the understanding of evil in Christianity and Islam, and is analyzing how evil in Christianity and Islam has been handled in horror film examples. With the 2000s, a quantitative increase in horror films started and many horror films have been shot until today. Aside from the exceptions, most of the films aimed to create horror element by using religious images of Islam. The fountain head of this study is whether the films using Islamic images reflect the Islam in terms of content. In this context, Islam and Christianity have been handled with the understanding of evil and it is aimed to reveal the differences. It is analyzed how Turkish horror cinema the foreign films of which were imitations maintained the understanding of imitation by using Islamic images with the 2000s. The analysis of film examples which were made in the context of the understanding of evil in Islam through Turkish horror films after 2000, how the approach towards evil and towards the devil and jinns which are materialized forms of evil is have been searched. This study aims to find out whether Islam is an appropriate basis for horror cinema. Keywords: Horror cinema, Islam, Christianity, Understanding of Evil, Devil and Jinns
