Abstract (EN)

This study deals with the political life of İsmet Sezgin, one of the important politicians of the Republican period, and his parliamentary activities between the years 1961 and 1980. While presenting Sezgin's life and personality, his political career was also focused on. Sezgin's political activities, which started with his election as the Mayor of Aydın from the Democrat Party in the local elections held in 1955 and continued until the 1960 coup, the 1960 coup and its process, his election as a deputy of Aydın from the Justice Party in the 1961 general elections, and his legislative activities and opinions from 1965 until the 1980 coup, were examined. The main sources used during the formation of this study are the local newspapers of Aydın, namely Ses, Yeni Kıroba, and Hür Aydın. In addition, national newspapers such as Cumhuriyet and Milliyet, which were among the leading publications of the period, were also used while addressing Sezgin's political life. Moreover, while presenting his parliamentary activities and ministerial periods, State Archives and the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Minutes of Proceedings were also utilized. Lastly, his own books and many copyrighted and original works of the period were largely benefited from. Among the findings of the study is Sezgin's understanding that politics is a means of serving the country and an occupation that must be carried out within the framework of courtesy.
