Comparative analysis and alternative suggestions in parking lot systems in Istanbul

As it is known, cities with a large population density and the automobile ownership that come with it cause traffic congestion, noise, air pollution, time loss, parking problems, etc. causes transportation problems in the city. In this study, the problem of parking, which is the cause of the transportation problem in Istanbul, has been studied. Within the scope of the study, 5 cities were determined and their parking needs were calculated. Selected cities were determined as Başakşehir, Kadıköy, Kağıthane, Şişli and Beşiktaş. Using the Turkish standards, the data from the Population Directorate and the TUIK data, the current parking needs were calculated according to the density of the districts. The data obtained were calculated based on the population number of each district, the number of vehicles, the population distribution and the number of available parking lots. According to the observed results, problems were identified and suggestions were presented. As a result of this study, it has been determined that the number of parking lots in selected cities in Istanbul is insufficient. Suggestions are to change the roadside model, to apply ferris wheel parking lots and to apply fully automatic parking in open areas, according to the density needs of each district. According to the data obtained and the population density ratio, the city with the least parking problem has been determined as Başakşehir. The provision of parking areas for the buildings built considering the new construction and need of the city has minimized this problem. In the continuation of the research, it was seen that the city with the most problems was Kadıköy and the approximate parking space requirement was determined at the rate of 56.75%.
