Abstract (EN)

The housing that emerges to the built environment as a result of people's need for housing is a constantly changing concept. Istanbul is the city where the changes and transformations of housing are most visible in Turkey. The main objective of this study is to examine the housing typologies, which has been affected according to economic, social, political, technological and many other factors. Istanbul, particularly, has hosted many typologic examples. The study contains both the literature review and the case analysis in the field. In the first chapter, conceptual issues related to type, typology and housing are discussed. In the second chapter, the process of changing typology of the dwellings in Istanbul was examined over five periods. These periods are taken up in the events that can be counted as thresholds that have affected the dwelling. In the third chapter, case analysis were conducted on the sample housing units as plan types and facades. The findings and assessment of the study are in the last section.
