An examination of kadiköy opera passage in the context of interior spaces where commercial memory is sustained in İstanbul

In this study, the historical development of Opera (Onur) Passage (Opera Pasajı) located on Bahariye Street in Kadıköy, one of the significant places of the Asian side of Istanbul, the functional changes over time, the sectors served, and its continious existence and changes from past to present have been documented through on-site examination. The research also covers the period when the passage was previously known as Opera Cinema (Opera Sineması). Therefore, the past purposes of use for the passage are also included in the study. Moreover, the location of the passage, its relationship with Bahariye Street and the urban fabric, its architectural features, the fact that it has been home to many boutique stores from the evening dress market, a type of women's clothing, although it has had various stores and customer base in different periods for many years, have been examined. Opera (Onur) Passage is located in Istanbul, Kadıköy District, Osmanağa Neighborhood, Section No. 17, Block No 12, Parcel No. 8. The passage is located on General Asım Gündüz Street, popularly known as Bahariye Street, in the building with door number 17. It has two basement floors and one ground floor and three floors. Throughout its existence, humanity has learned how to find solutions to its vital and shelter needs by experiencing the earth. Following the agricultural revolution with the transition to the settled system, man learned how to trade by exchanging the excess of what they produced. This activity, with cases such as buying and selling, has created its own spaces and systems by triggering significant changes in human history. Commercial activities caused the establishment of new cities, and civil and public buildings used for commercial purposes began to be built in cities. Within the settlement areas, people soon needed places to spend their free time, shop and occasionally have fun in addition to meeting their basic needs. Consequently, this process led to the emergence of new building groups and interior spaces. Structures such as city squares, parks, marketplaces, recreation areas, inns and passages (arcade) were buit, starting in Europe, particularly towards the end of the 19th century. Some of these places managed to turn into buildings that reflect the image of the city and became sites of memory for the district to which they belong. In today's contemporary cities, numerous commercial spaces such as metro/train stations, airports, shopping malls, common areas of public buildings are being built.
