Incidence of skin diseases in cats and dogs around İstanbul

Skin diseases in dogs and cats are encountered commonly in clinics and are believed that unfavorable nutrition, housing and handling conditions play an important role on their developments. In this study, it was evaluated the skin diseases detected from a total of 26 small animal institutions providing surgery, policlinic, care, housing and rehabilitation services in İstanbul province. The study tried to identify which animals experience the disease more severely and what are the causes of these diseases by determining incidence of the diseases in relation to the factors such as sex, age, breed and species. A total of 1000 cases composed of 653 dogs and 347 cats were used in the study. Of dogs, 256 (39.2%) included younger (0-2), 153 (23.5%) middle-aged (2-5), and 244 (37.3%) old (5-13), and of cats, 164 (% 47.3) included younger (0-2), 92 (27%) middle-aged (2-7), 91 (26%) old (7-19) animals. As a result of the evaluation performed, it was determined itch dermatoses (cat:103 (29.7%); dog:173 (26.5%)) in 276, diseases characterized with sinus formation (cat: 66 (19%); dog: 143 (21.9%)) in 210, scabies (cat: 8 (2.3%); dog: 114 (17.4%)) in 122, dermatopytoses (cat: 54 (15.6%); dog: 44 (6.7%)) in 98, nodüler dermatoses (cat:28 (8%); dog: 59 (9%)) in 87, complicated dermatoses (cat: 2 (0.6%); dog: 62 (9.5%)) in 64, abscess (cat: 22 (6.3%); dog: 9 (1.4%)) in 31, environmental dermatoses (cat: 11 (3.2%); dog: 12 (1.8%)) in 23, otitis externa (cat: 3 (0.9%); dog: 13 (2%)) in 16, ulcerative dermatoses (cat: 6 (1.7%); dog: 7 (1%)) in 13, endocrine dermatoses (cat: 3 (0.9%); dog: 9 (1.4%)) in 12, fat tail syndrome (cat: 11 (3.2%)) in 11, authohematom in 10 (cat: 2 (0.6%); dog: 8 (1.2%)) in 10, crusting and scaling diseases (cat: 2 (0.6%); dog: 5 (0.8%)) in 7, fotosensibilizacion (cat: 4 (1.2%)) in 4, cushing sydrome (dog: 3 (0.5%) in 3, atopy (dog: 3 (0.5%)) in 3, interdigital dermatitis (dog: 3 (0.5%)) in 3 and summer dermatitis (dog: 1 (0.2%)) in 1, cases. It was concluded that there was a close relationship between the skin diseases of dogs and cats and the factors such as breed, sex, age, nutrition, housing and handling the animals.
