Antimicrobial activity of istranca oak (quercus hartwissiana steven) against hospital pathogens

Abstract (EN)

This study aims to determine antibacterial activity levels of the endemic Quercus hartwissiana Steven plant on microorganisms isolated from patients who were hospitalized in Duzce University Research Hospital with infection diagnosis. The plant sap was extracted in the Soxhlet device with ethanol, formaldehit, asheton, etil ashetat and methanol solvents. Using disc diffusion method, 50µL of the extracted sap was used to study its antimicrobial activities against the bacteria, Pseudomanas, Acinetobacter, MRSA, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Salmonella, Stapyhlococcus aureus, Enterococcus and Stapyhlococcus epidermidis; and yeast cultures, Candida albicans, Candida glabrata ve Candida tropicalis. The results have been compared to the standard antifungal and antibacterial antibiotics. The findings have indicated that Quercus hartwissiana Steven plant has the greatest antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Stapyhlococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The plant has also shown different levels of antimicrobial activity against all other microorganizms aforementioned. The plant sap extracted with ethilashetat has also been found to have the greatest antimicrobial effect compared to saps extracted with other solvents.
