Impression management and performance appraisal: A qualitative research in Antalya organized Industrial Zone

The aim of the study is to reveal the effect of employee impression management tactical use on the performance appraisal process in order to ensure that it is efficient and effective in human resources practices in organizations. The research was conducted with 16 human resources officials working in companies in different sectors operating in Antalya Organized Industrial Zone and involved in performance appraisal processes. In this study, the use of tactical use of employees, the attitude of human resources managers against these tactics and the situation of falling into performance appraisal errors were interpreted. Face -to -face and online interviews were held with the semi-structured interview method with the participants. The findings obtained as a result of the interviews were analyzed and interpreted by content analysis method. The data obtained; It is presented with the themes of "General Information About Human Resources Officer", "General Information About the Interviewed Institution", "Performance Appraisal Methods and Uses of Results", "Impression Management Behaviors and Human Resources Managers Attitude", "Performance Appraisal Errors" and "Use of Impression Management Tactics and Career Advancement". In the first part of the research, the concept of impression management, impression management purposes, models of impression management and tactics of impression management are explained. In the second part, the literature on the relationship between impression management and performance appraisal is presented. In the third part, the findings of the interviews with human resources officials were analyzed and interpreted in order to understand the employees' impression management tactics usage, HR's attitude towards it and their performance appraisal errors.
