Frequency dependent attenuation of seismic waves in and around İzmir

Abstract (EN)

In this study, frequency dependent attenuation of seismic waves in and around İzmir is studied. The earthquake data is recorded by İzmirNET seismic network between 2008-2018 year, M≥2.3 magnitude were used. İzmirNET seismic network is located between 38.00-38.75N longitudes and 26.30-27.50E latitudes and it consists of 19 accelerometers. İzmirNET seismic stations were established to surround tectonic elements with high seismicity in residential areas around the gulf. Attenuation of coda waves is caused by anelastic path, wave propogation between the discontinuities or diffraction caused by heterogeneities. The frequency dependence of the seismic quality factor for the coda wave was determined Q0 times f^n. The attenuation characteristic of seismic waves is determined by using Coda Q analysis. Band pass filtering is applied at various center frequencies to calculate the coda wave quality factor. CODAQ algorithm in SEISAN Earthquake Analysis Software was used in the study. It was determined that the high Q values in the study represent tectonically stable and low Q values as represent seismically active regions. The fact that İzmir and its surroundings have a complex tectonic regime supports the low Q values that we obtained and shows the excessive separation within the crust. As a result of this master thesis, a frequency dependent quality factor correlation was obtained for İzmir and its surroundings.
