Investigation of the incidence of hip dysplasia in dogs in İzmir province

Hip dysplasia in dogs is a polygenic and multifactorial developmental disease characterized by laxity, degeneration, and osteoarthritis of the coxofemoral joint. In this study aimed to investigate the incidence of hip dysplasia in dogs in İzmir province. The study included 600 dogs of various ages, breeds, and genders suspected of hip dysplasia. Radiographic images of the dogs were taken in a ventro-dorsal extended limb position, and evaluated for hip dysplasia using the Norberg-Olsson method with computer software. The dogs were categorized based on age, gender, breed, and left-right hip. A scale was used to assess Norberg-Olsson angles, classifying them as follows: 1st degree for angles between 100-105 degrees, 2nd degree for 90-100 degrees, 3rd degree for 90-80 degrees, and 4th degree for angles below 80 degrees. Among the 600 dogs in the study, hip dysplasia was diagnosed in 200 dogs. Among these, 19% were Kangal, 19% were German Shepherd, 15% were Golden Retriever, 7% were Labrador Retriever, 6.5% were Rottweiler, and 28% were other breeds. Based on the study's findings, the incidence of hip dysplasia in dogs in İzmir province was determined to be 33.33%.
