Özet (EN)
The Gregorian chants performed during the rituals of Catholic churches in İzmir constitute a significant musical element that enriches religious ceremonies and immerses the congregation in a spiritual atmosphere. As a crossroads of diverse cultures and beliefs, İzmir holds a unique place in sustaining the continuity of this historical musical tradition within its liturgical practices. In this context, Gregorian chant is not merely a form of sacred music, but a means of cultural expression and a symbol of belonging within the cultural heritage of İzmir's Catholic community. This thesis aims to examine the cultural role that Gregorian chants have assumed in the Catholic churches of İzmir. This study aims to examine the cultural role of Gregorian chants performed in the Catholic churches of İzmir within a ritual context, as well as their impact on the religious life of the local Catholic community. The research explores the historical origins of Gregorian chant, the functions these chants have assumed in the daily rituals of İzmir's church communities, and how they have contributed to the formation of cultural identity. The findings reveal that Gregorian chant has transcended its role as a mere form of liturgical music, becoming a deeply rooted expression of belonging and identity within the cultural memory of the Catholic community in İzmir. This thesis investigates the cultural role of Gregorian chants in the rituals of Catholic churches in İzmir and their impact on the religious life of the local Catholic community. In this context, it is argued that Gregorian chant is not merely a form of sacred music, but has become deeply rooted as a means of expression and a symbol of belonging within the cultural heritage of İzmir's Catholic population. Furthermore, the study focuses on how these chants have given meaning to the spiritual experiences of the Catholic community from past to present and how they have been preserved as an integral part of cultural heritage.
