Abstract (EN)
The aim of this thesis is to test the performance of the existing sea wall at the Kordon Region in the inner gulf of Izmir, against the wave overtopping during storms. To achieve this aim, firstly, the current geometry of the study area is detected. The studies which presented the wind and wave climate of the area were performed by the academicians from the Ocean Engineering Research Center of the Civil Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University with whom a joint Scientific Research Project is conducted. After determining wind-wave climate and the geometry of the shoreline, experiments were carried out in the wave flumes of the Ocean Engineering Research Center of the Civil Engineering Department of the Middle East Technical University. For the experiments, critical values of the real data formed by the seawall geometries at seven predetermined crosssections were taken, then average values were scaled down to model scale. Experiments are carried out for different wave conditions and water depths. The results obtained showed the physical performance of the existing seawalls. The formulas from five outstanding studies in the literature is investigated in order to find out the formula which gives the closest result to the real situation on a seawall which has the characteristics resembling the physical structure of the Kordon Region. The model geometry and data on wave and water depths used in the experiments were placed in the formulas from the five studies in the literature. The other aim for this thesis is to investigate. For this purpose, the model geometry, wave climate and water depth data are used in the experiments, to utilize the formulas of the selected five studies in the literature. The formula which gives the closest result to the physical results is determined by comparing the analytical results from the formulas and the physical results from the experiments. This formula is used with the data taken from seven different cross-sections separately to present the performance of the seawall in Kordon Region analytically. It is demonstrated that the results are above the tolerable limits.
