Researching the Etiologic Factors in Cases Who Complain of Generalized Pruritus Objective: Pruritus; which is the most common symptom in skin diseases, may be defined as a disturbing sense that causes itching. In addition to skin diseases, it should not be forgotten that pruritus can come in view as a result of many systemic and psychogenic disorders. The purpose of our study is to determine the prevalence of etiologic factors of pruritus and to share our clinical approach to patients who complain of generalized pruritus. Methods: We have analysed patient records of Çukurova University Medicine Faculty Balcalı Hospital, Dermatology and Venerology Department Outpatient?s Clinic between years 2009-2013. We selected 73 patient who complain of chronic pruritus for a time period more than 6-8 weeks, and 150 patient who apply for a skin disorder instead of chronic itch. Findings: In our patient group, etiologic findings are: 39.7 % atopy, 28.8 % psychiatric diseases, 27.4 % endocrinological diseases, 24.7 % hematological diseases, 9.59 % hepatobiliary diseases, 8.2 % infectious disease, 6.85 % malignancy, 6.8 % contact sensitivity, 4.1 % suspected drug usage, 1.4 % chronic renal disease, 1.4 % various neuropathic conditions. Conclusion: Chronic pruritus, that persists more than 6-8 weeks, may be a sign of underlying dermatologic, systemic and psychogenic disorders. Therefore; we should investigate the patient?s medical history and we should make physical examination.İf necessary, we may send the patient to laboratory and radiological tests. If we can find a sign of underlying dermatologic, systemic or psychogenic disorder; it should be treaten.
