Özet (EN)
The island of Cyprus has been the key point of controling the Mediterranean throughout the history for many governments who tried to take the rule it. Ottoman Empire managed to get under the rule of the Cyprus in 1571. As a result of the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877-1878, also known as the War of 93, Russian advanced to Istanbul, the capital, signing the Treaty of Ayastafanos, runs the Britain because their counter interests of mobilized. England wanted to settle in the island of Cyprus temporarily supposedly to help the Ottoman Empire, and the Ottoman Empire acceded to this request as an any port in a storm. Despite this was a temporary settlement with the determination of a treaty, the Great Britain did not want to get out of the islands. When the Ottoman Empire took place with Germany during the World War I, the United Kingdom announced that they annexed the island. It's just confined by the Ottoman Empire with protesting against. That the Treaty of Lausanne Peace on 24 July 1923, Cyprus was transferred to England has been adopted. In the year 1931, the Greek Cypriot Enosis dream again intensified and initiated a rebellion. However, Cyprus has been an island where Turkish and Greek Cypriots living together. In accordance with the Greek Megale Idea, based on the Enosis dreams of the Greek Cypriots in 1571, has strengthened the dreams in 1914 and continued until the present day. Greece took the case in Cyprus to the United Nations in 1954 but they returned empty-handed from there. As a result, Archbishop Makarios by provoking the Greek Cypriot together with EOKA which was terrorist organization, began to persecution and death to the Turks in 1955. Powerful countries, mainly US, remained indifferent to the situation on the island and there was no intervention. Turkey repeatedly voiced what was going on and wanted to find an end to this carnage, but no improvement was seen. In accordance with the Zürich- London and Guarantee agreements, the right as a guarantor, Turkey did not want to stay silent of this arising slaughter; therefore, to put an end to what was happening in Cyprus, Turkey announced that he would intervene. On remarks, a warning letter to Turkey was sent by the US President Lyndon Baines Johnson. The general lines of the letter; if there is an intervention of Turkey in Cyprus, Turkey cannot use weapons given by the United States, and there would be no other assistance. In addition, one of the important issues, in any case of a USSR attack against to Turkey, the United States would be objective. After this letter, Turkey saw the true face of the United States previously seen as the most trusted ally. After this incident, Turkey said to the United States "Yankee Go Home". For the Turk-American relationship, Truman Doctrine became a turning paint positively, on the contrary Johnson?s letter affected negatively. In this work, I am going to advert the change of the perception of Turkey's policy of the US and the world, then the Johnson letter which gives direction to the development of Turkey?s relations with the Soviet Union, in the domestic and international politics.
